"More money won't quiet a dysregulated nervous system. It hands it a bigger stage."
- Jason Alan Bohrer

Introduction:
He had everything and was still miserable. More money doesn't quiet a dysregulated nervous system — it hands it a bigger stage. One question fixes the wiring.

This took 43 years to write.

Well — 43 years, 525 pages, and upwards of $200,000.

And here it is, the whole thing: life is simpler than we make it. It's about doing the thing that speaks to you in any given moment.

That's it. That's the sentence.

I know how it sounds. Like a bumper sticker that cost me a fortune. So here's the part worth the money — why it took that long.

Here's the mechanic, because this is biology, not attitude:

The thing that speaks to you is a signal, and the signal is quiet. In a regulated body it's unmistakable — a task, a person, a direction that makes energy go up instead of down. That's resonance. It's what "speaks to you" actually means, physiologically.

But a system in survival can't hear it. Threat is loud, and it has its own vocabulary: should. Have to. Everyone expects. Survival replaces the signal with rules, plans, other people's maps — and a life that runs on those gets complicated, because it's steering by noise. Complexity is the sound of a system that can't hear itself.

That's the 43 years. The signal was always there. I was too loud inside to hear it.

And this isn't "do whatever you feel like." Impulse is loud, urgent, and relieving — that's discharge, survival's voice again. The signal is quiet and energizing. One leaves you drained after. The other leaves you fuller. Your body already knows the difference. You just have to be quiet enough to consult it.

So here's my challenge this week:

Run the Signal Check. Three times a day, at a transition — morning, after lunch, the drive home — ninety seconds to get quiet. Then one question: "What speaks to me right now?" Not what's due. Not what's expected. What speaks.

Then do that thing first. Even for ten minutes.

The tell: the signal never says "should." If your answer has a should in it, that's the noise talking. Get quiet again — and notice how much simpler the real answer is than the plan.
